The History of Architecture of Luxury Homes in Naples

The luxury architecture in Naples is varied and intriguing! Here are a few luxury architectural styles that have dominated the Naples landscape over the last century:

1920s: Spanish and Mediterranean Revival

The 1920s luxury resort architect Addison Mizner is best known as the builder of Boca Raton. However, Naples also held a special place in Mizner’s heart. He rejected the then-modern style and became one of America’s most famous architects with his “Jazz Age” homes. You can find a two-story Spanish-Mediterranean home he built still standing at 670 Gulf Shore Boulevard. This home was originally called the Whiteside House and recently underwent historical renovations. It’s now known as the Casita de la Playa.

1980s: A Polynesian Theme

In the late 1970s long-time Marco Island resident Herb Savage began designing homes in the area. His home design ideas stemmed from his travels and included a variety of canal-front homes and beachside condos with a Polynesian theme. He also designed commercial buildings like the Marco Island Yacht Club and what is now the JW Marriott. “There wouldn’t be history on [Marco] Island if it wasn’t for Herb,” Marco Island resident Debra Shanahan told Marco News.

1990s: Return to Mediterranean Designs

According to the Florida History website, the average house in Naples was built in 1987. This means many of the homes you’ll find in Naples are built in the 1990s and beyond. The luxury homes in the 90s and early 2000s are primarily of the Mediterranean architectural style. However, that began changing recently!

Today: Island Contemporary

Today, the luxury architecture style has swung back to an interest in the Olde Florida and West Indies style. Cleaner lines with a contemporary “island” look define the most recent builds. However, large, newly built Mediterranean homes are still available, as this home style remains popular in the luxury market.

At Talis Park, you’ll find a variety of newly built homes in Mediterranean, Indies, and other modern styles. Each home is afforded a superb view of Naples’s gorgeous natural beauty and comes with access to a world-championship golf course and premier amenities.
